2015 Olive Harvest Great Despite Drought

By Susan Bragstad – Amador Olive Oil

The Fall 2015 olive harvest was incredibly abundant and yielded great oil production. A bad year will yield 25 gallons per ton, a good year 40 gallons per ton. This was a good year throughout the area. Now we have to figure out why. No rain on the blossoms? Long hot summer? It was an “on” year? Lucky?
Since I had to drill a new well, I’m nervous about running out of water. I irrigated very sparingly, and it didn’t seem to hurt my production. So I’ll be watering less in the future. My trees will appreciate our rainy winter. It will be interesting to see what my new crop looks like with all this nice rain. On to summer!
